wisdom, compassion, and skillful means 智慧・慈悲・方便 Generally in Mahayana, enlightenment is represented by the notion of “wisdom and compassion” or that of “wisdom and skillful means”. In this statement the two notions are combined and presented as the triple virtue gained by a bodhisattva who aspires to attain birth in Amida’s Pure Land through practicing samatha and vipasyana. The enlightened wisdom is combined with great compassion, and great compassion appears as the skillful means to save suffering beings. In Shinran’s acceptance of this passage, the triple virtue of enlightenment is Bodhisattva Dharmākara’s.
