unsurpassed, great benefit 無上大利 Refers to the attainment of Buddhahood, the supreme nirvana. This term is based on a passage in the Larger Sutra: The Buddha said to Maitreya. “If there are persons who, having heard the Name of that Buddha, leap and dance with joy and say it even once, know that they receive the great benefit; that is, they acquire the unexcelled virtues.” Concerning the phrase, “receive the great benefit”, Shinran says, “they will realize the supreme nirvana; hence it is further stated [in the Larger Sutra], ‘that is, they acquire the unexcelled virtues’.” Since the Name of Amida Buddha contains every kind of virtues, a person of the entrusting heart who says the Name even once will attain the unsurpassed, great benefit of realizing enlightenment in the Pure Land.
