the phrase ‘purity’ 清浄句 Purity in the context of this text does not only mean ‘not defiled’ or ‘not contaminated’, but also symbolically indicates the highest and ultimate state of all existence. Especially in Yogacara, this notion constitutes the essence of the bodhisattva practice. Since performing bodhisattva practice purifies the mind, what is fulfilled in the end through such practice is also expressed as purity. In the Treatise, a bodhisattva who aspires to attain enlightenment through birth in the Pure Land is sustained by this notion of purity. Moreover, Amida’s land is also sustained on purity, namely, this highest, ultimate state of existence. In the Commentary, the twenty-nine adornments culminate in the phrase ‘purity’.
