say the Name, holding steadfast to it 執持称名号 “Holding steadfast to the Name” is a phrase of doctrinal importance which first appeared in the Amida Sutra. In Chapter on Easy Practice, this phrase corresponds to “thinking of” or “being mindful of” the names of the Buddhas in the ten quarters. Shinran, however, applied this notion to Amida’s Name and equated it with the phrase stated in the Amida Sutra. Though sometimes translated as “call the Name”, there is no difference in meaning from “say the Name”.
