right practoce 正行 According to Shan-tao, all the Pure Land practices are classified into two categories, “right practices” and “various practices”. The “right practices” which lead to birth in Pure Land are: 1) chanting the Three Pure Land Sutras, 2) contemplation on Amida Buddha and the various adornments of the Pure Land, 3) worship of Amida Buddha, 4) saying the Name (nembutsu), 5) praising and making offerings to the Buddha. Among the five right practices, Shan-tao singled out saying Amida’s Name as the “act of true settlement” and termed the remaining four “auxiliary acts”. For Rennyo, the term “right practice” is exclusively used to mean saying the nembutsu.
