the phrase purity 清浄句 Purity in the context of this text does not mean “not defiled” or “not contaminated”, but symbolically indicates the highest and ultimate state of all existence. Especially in Yogācāra, this notion constitutes the essence of the bodhisattva practice. Performing the bodhisattva practice is purifying one’s mind, and what if fulfilled in the end through such a practice is expressed as purity, too. In the Treatise, a bodhisattva who aspires to attain enlightenment through birth in the Pure Land is sustained by this notion of purity. Moreover, Amida’s land is also sustained on purity, namely, this highest, ultimate state of all existence.
