original vow 本願 Skt. pūrva-praṇidāna, meaning past or previous aspiration or wish. In Mahayana Buddhism, every bodhisattva is to awaken the mind of aspiration for enlightenment along with the mind to save all other sentient bengs. In our series we have used “Primal Vow” specifically for Bodhisattva Dharmākara’s aspiration in order to differentiate it from that of bodhisattvas in general. See PrimalVow of Amida Buddha.
