nonretrogression　不退転 The stage of bodhisattvas from which they will never backslide in their advance to enlightenment because they have realized suchness nondichotomously―that is, have already reached the other shore of nirvana―even though they continue to live in a dichotomous world. The reason of shinjin has attained the stage of nonretrogression because, having been “grasped by Amida, never to be abandoned”, he or she has entered the ocean of Amida’s Primal Vow, so that “the long night of birth-and-death has already dawned”. Thus, birth in the Pure Land will unfailingly be brought about through the working of jinen.
