Devadatta 提婆達多,調達 A cousin of Śākyamuni; he attempted to kill the Buddha in order to take over the leadership of the sangha. In the story of the Tragedy at Rājagṛha, he provoked Ajātaśatru to kill his father, King Bimbisāra. Thus, he is a figure considered to be the most wicked man in the history of Buddhism. Shinran, however, had quite a unique view of Devadatta, Ajātaśatru, and Vaidehī: that they were incarnations of enlightened beings who appeared in this world to make us realize the evil nature of human existence.
