Contemplation Sutra 観経 One of the Three Pure Land Sutras; the full title is the Sutra on the Contemplation of the [Buddha of] Immeasurable Life. The translator of the Chinese text is attributed to Kālayaśas of the Liu-Sung Dynasty. It is famous for its dramatic prologue featuring Queen Vaidehī and Prince Ajātaśatru. The other two of the three sutras are the Larger Sutra and the Smaller Sutra. Shinran considers that the Larger Sutra is the true teaching, and the other two have dual aspects, true and provisional. Explicitly, in its provisional aspect, the Contemplation Sutra teaches the self-power practices of contemplation on various aspects of the Pure Land and Amida Buddha as well as bodhisattvas there, and also teaches religious and worldly good acts. But in its implicit aspect, it expresses the teaching of the nembutsu of the Primal Vow.
