Buddhas in the six quarters 六方諸仏 The whole universe is divided into six quarters or directions, i.e., east, south, west, north, nadir, and zenith. In each quarter, there are innumerable Buddhas as many as the sands of the Ganges. The other Chinese translation of the Amida Sutra by Hsüan-tsang 玄奘 (602-664) presents Buddhas in the ten quarters with the addition of the four intermediate directions.
