blind passions 煩悩 A translation of a Sanskrit term, kleśa (affliction). It is rooted in the fierce, stubborn clinging to the deluded and evil self that constitutes the basis of human existence. It gives rise to various evil acts in such a way as to cause mental and physical suffering. The process of cause and effect―blind passions causing suffering and suffering giving rise to further delusion and blind passions―repeats endlessly and eventually propels a person to transmigrate in the realm of birth-and-death. The three major blind passions, known as the “three poisons”, are greed, anger, and ignorance.
