being grasped, never to be abandoned 摂取不捨 This phrase comes from the Contemplation Sutra, which states that Amida’s light “illumines all the worlds in the ten quarters, grasping and never abandoning sentient beings of the nembutsu”. This describes Amida’s great compassion to save all beings; at the moment they realize the entrusting heart, they are grasped by Amida and never abandoned, and thus abide in the stage of non-retrogression and will unfailingly attain birth in the Pure Land.
